The Railway city is located at the center of the Greater Central Business District of the future Nairobi as indicated in the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Masterplan. To strengthen the Central Business District functions, the surrounding areas of Upper Hill and areas along Lusaka Road will be consolidated to the existing Central Business District under the comprehensive approach.

In future to enhance the competitiveness of Nairobi metropolis, there will be a need for expansion. The population of the metropolis is projected to be 10 million inhabitants by 2040. In the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Masterplan, the concept of an expanded Central Business District combines the existing Central Business District with the service area across Moi avenue, Upper hill, and southern industrial area with Railway city.

For the future greater Central Business District scale, the Railway city occupies the linchpin area to link all directions.
